Outgoing District Governor (DG) Patrick Obath expressed confidence that District 9212 is safe in the hands of incoming District Governor Alex Nyaga. He was speaking during the 2021 virtual District Conference and Assembly (DCA) on 10 April 2021. Past District Governor (PDG) Obath described the highlights of his term. He relived the turbulent early days of the Covid-19 pandemic and his visits to clubs in Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan.
“I am leaving the district in safe hands in DGE Alex,” he said, pointing out that the new DG had accompanied him on his extensive travels and had seen, first-hand, the challenges and opportunities facing clubs in the district. He said there was an immediate opportunity for Rotary to get involved in supporting people displaced by ongoing war and environmental disasters in the region. Further, he said, there was an opportunity to continue seeking to engage with the government of Eritrea with a view to opening doors for Rotary. He began and ended his address by strumming a tune on his guitar.
PDG Obath and DG Nyaga sealed the handover of the leadership of the district with a Covid-safe elbow bump in lieu of a handshake. DG Alex, in turn, presided over the induction of George Emmanuel Otieno, the Charter President of the Rotaract Club of Lang’ata, as District Rotaract Representative (DRR) 2021-2022.
DG Alex Nyaga led incoming club presidents across the district in an oath of office, paving the way for President-Elect Kizito Makatiani to begin his term of office on 1 July 2021.
The winners of this year’s Sam Awori awards, announced during the DCA, included RCL Rotarians Sheila Koks (Membership Director of the Year), Dr Esther Njoroge (Fundraising Director of the Year), and President Sarah Migwi (DG’S PHF Challenge Award). Rotary Lang’ata brought home the Rotary Foundation Excellence Award.
In a final shining moment for the Rotary Club of Lang’ata, Past President Antoinette Absaloms, announced her chairmanship of the organizing committee of the May 2022 DCA and declared registrations open.
Dear DG Nyaga,
Greetings from RC Holland, USA! My name is Kathy DeVries, chair of our club’s International Service Committee. Our club and district have established friendships with Rotary Clubs in 9212 including RC Kisumu and in the past, RC Eldoret where the RC of Holland supported a silage project a few years ago.
I am writing today to humbly request your consideration of GG2230570 Homabay County Water & Sanitation Project. Much work has been done to date by the RC of Kisumu to prepare for this endeavor and our club and others are eager to support this worthy project. District 6290 has already granted authorization.
I would be happy to answer any questions you may have, and trust that we may enjoy your enthusiastic support for the endeavor as well.
Thank you for receiving this transmission, and kindly send me a short reply so I know this request has reached you.
Yours in Rotary Service,
Kathy DeVries
