Car & General: 87 Years of Resilience and Re-imagination

This week we have the pleasure of hosting Vijay Gidoomal, CEO Car and General PLC.
Mr. Gidoomal qualified as a lawyer with Clifford Chance in the UK in 1992. He returned to Kenya 1993 and was responsible for establishing Car & General operations in Uganda and Tanzania as Executive Director. He became the Managing Director of Car & General in 1996 and oversaw a complete restructuring of the company’s revenue base, gradually introducing new product lines that included the pioneering of the introduction of three wheelers and two wheelers as taxis in East Africa.
Vijay has seen the company gain regional representation in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Seychelles, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia. In 2017, C&G entered a joint venture agreement with Cummins Inc to represent Cummins products in Eastern Africa. In 2017, C&G also entered the Fintech business through the acquisition of 30% of Watu Credit whose primary focus is financing of two and three wheelers. In 2020, C&G launched its first retail development ‘Nairobi Mega’ with Carrefour as its anchor tenant. In 2021, C&G launched ‘Boda +’ which manufactures helmets of a high quality for East Africa. C&G is now primarily focused on automotive and equipment distribution, financial services, real estate, agriculture and manufacturing. C&G has over 1m customers in East Africa and is responsible for over 5m daily lives.
